Bak Kut Teh has always been a favorite of mine. In fact, the one bak kut teh stall i have been having for over 30 years is still in existence and still tastes the same as ever but that is a story for another day. Today, we'll talk about Rong Hua Bak Kut Teh located conveniently at Waterway Point for the north easterlies.

Pu Er Tea
The bill for 4 people
I like the fact that the bill is served in the beginning after you finish ordering. Makes budgeting that much easier.
Braised Pig Trotters
The meal proper has everything mentioned in the set and we ordered additional dough fritters and a fish soup to complete the meal.

The Bak Kut Teh belongs to the more peppery kind with clear soup and tends to be more salty as well. Its pleasant and warm with 3 pieces of meaty pork ribs and i liked that the refills come quick, often and without us having to ask. I had 4 refills before i stopped eating so i quite enjoyed it. Its not too oily and is soothing down the throat.

The rest of the set had some standouts like the HK Style sliced fish which tasted really good although we were expecting a whole fish from the set menu. It did write Hong Kong Style Steamed Fish, not HK style sliced fish but thats about all the complaints i have. The sliced fish was nice and the soy sauce used really enhanced and complemented the Bak Kut Teh and rice i feel.

The Xiao Bai Cai was also very good and the pig trotters has enough lean meat for the health conscious to eat with less guilt while still being very flavorful.

The only dark spots were the dough fritters which are soft, cold and soggy while the sliced fish soup had a fishy taste and strangely, the fish used for the soup was not as good. Texture was powdery for the fish in the soup.

Otherwise, we found this meal quite good indeed. Is it the best Bak Kut Teh? That is a tough question because different people like different bak kut teh and there are so many variations. For what they serve, i think it caters to a broad audience and should find some people who enjoy it.

For $15 per person, this was a pretty filling meal with some pretty decent food.

Verdict: Good for the peppery soup lovers.
