Bonchon is a famous global brand for Korean fried chicken which has stores worldwide due to the popularity of its fried chicken recipes. In Singapore, they have 2 outlets with the Bugis outlet being its flagship and a second one recently opened in Compass One at Seng Kang. We visited the Bugis outlet for this review.
Bonchon Wings Half and Half Lunch Special
Bonchon Wings Half and Half Lunch Special ($9.90)
The first up is obviously their famous korean chicken and you'll no doubt find similarities with the likes of four fingers and various other korean fried chicken stores. Their wings come in 2 flavors, the soy garlic or hot sauce flavors.
We tried both and found the wings hot, juicy, not too oily and crispy. The soy garlic sauce is sweet and fragrant while the hot sauce is indeed very spicy in the same level as the spicy korean noodles. Fries were nice thick cut and equally non oily.
Japaghetti ($9.90)
The second dish we tried was the Japaghatti, which is basically Ja Jiang Mian (black bean sauce noodles) with fried chicken. The first thing we noticed was the noodles because it looked just like instant noodles and as you can from the picture. The presentation did not look appetizing. Serving was also pretty small for the price. Chicken was dry this time around. This was quite a disappointment as we expected better from the name. Maybe using actual spaghetti for the noodles will help? And definitely needs work on the plating and portion size.
Overall, this visit was a mixed bag and we left unfulfilled. Due to the small portions, we were also still a little hungry after spending around $25. Its not very expensive but you can certainly get better food from other competitors. That said, we only had these 2 dishes and it might be a case of ordering the wrong food.
Verdict: Try the wings and chicken.
