Malacca Day 2 Feasting - Restoran Tong Sheng

Malacca Day 2 Feasting - Tong Sheng Seafood

A spanky new signboard adorns the restaurant now and the queue is still as long as it has ever been. Come and queue early to get a seat in this extremely popular restaurant.

Plum Lime Drink (RM 21 $7 for 6)
Start the wait for food with a drink of their plum lime drink. Its refreshing and sourish enough to open your taste buds for the awesome food to come.
Medium Cheese Prawn Mee Hoon (RM 70 SGD 22)
In short? Must order. If you have no allergy to prawns and have a liking for cheese, there is no excuse not to order this since this is one of their chef recommended dishes. At SGD 22 for medium size, this fed 6 people, came with 2 huge prawns and lots of bee hoon. The real treat is the cheese sauce that's milky, sweet and prawn and fish stock and that wok hei filled bee hoon. Absolutely fantastic!

Stir Fried Vegetables (RM 8 SGD 3)
This simple dish is well done, not too oily and vegetables are crunchy and sweet. Serving size was generous too.

Ginger Chicken (RM 15 SGD 5)
Tender chicken marinated and fried with ginger and a sweet sauce similar to ketchup. Fragrant and just so good!

Sweet Vinegar Gui Hua Fish (RM 35 SGD 13)
Undoubtedly one of the stars on the table this night, this dish is also called squirrel fish in some other restaurants due to the shape it takes after frying. Its a lot of work that shows how well the chef is in deboning the fish and in the knife work involved. What sets it apart is the balanced flavors and the freshness and tenderness of the fried fish which is simply perfect. This is a must order!

Fresh milk crab and black pepper crab (RM 462 for 4 crabs SGD 160)
The fresh milk crab is one of the specialties in the place and how much you like it depends on how much you enjoy milk. Having said that, it doesn't really overwhelm but instead has a taste similar to a mixture of carnation milk, curry leaves and vinegar giving it a sourish and appetizing taste. The black pepper is equally well done without being overly spicy. The real star of the show is the absolutely fresh and sweet crabs themselves which are always firm, sweet and oh so juicy. At this price, yes, it is overpriced by local standards and even pricey by Singapore standards but i've yet to find a place serving equally good quality crabs at this price.
Total damage for this meal was RM 648.30 which is around SGD 220. Its not cheap but if you remove the crabs, this meal would have cost only RM 170 (SGD 60) for 6 people and that is not bad at all.

Verdict: Good quality food. Super long queues. Decent prices. Its the place to eat in Malacca and worth 4 hour journey down just to eat. Editors choice!
