Nestled in a corner of orchard road between Centrepoint and Cuppage Plaza, Santouka is not immediately an in-your-face Japanese ramen store which is prolific throughout Singapore. There are only 2 outlets, with the other in The Central at Clark Quay. Having been at this location in Orchard for a good period of time, Santouka has built a quiet and wildly positive reputation despite its rather modest marketing efforts within Singapore and people flock to it for what matters most, its excellent ramen.

This was a store selling authentic Japanese ramen even before the ramen craze hit Singapore and i vaguely remember hearing about it almost 15 years ago while i was still interning at a local company in Somerset. A fabled japanese noodle store in cuppage serving great tasting food. At that time, i wasn't a foodie and never made the pilgrimage to this place. In fact, it took me 15 years before i actually dropped in to try. I could be wrong, this might not be the store i heard 15 years back but it sure lives up to that reputation if it is.
Char Shu Ramen Set With Green Tea, Salad and Tonkatsu Donburi
With all ramen, the soup soup makes of breaks the dish. Santouka does not disappoint with their thick and rich tonkatsu broth. The set comes with salad, 1 cup of tea that cannot be refilled and donburi for maximum fullness. The pork on the donburi is braised in sweet shoyu and meltingly tender. The ramen is springy and cooked perfectly as is the char siew. The salad adds a refreshing touch.
One absolute enjoyment is if you finish the noodles, you can use the rice from the don and mix it with the tokatsu broth for absolute shiokness!

Seafood Ramen with Prawns, Salmon, Mussels and Clams
A time limited and store specific promotional item, this seafood ramen stole out hearts with its thick, fragrant and surprisingly delicious broth. The generous serving of fresh tasting seafood really added to the flavors and enjoyment of the dish and its really difficult to find something on par with this anywhere as of this writing. The soup must be one of the best i've had so far and the only complaint was that there was too little of it.
We completely slurped it all up and mixed it with rice and just savored every drop. Delicious!

Verdict: Great tasting ramen with no pretense. Editors Choice!
